A specialist college in Doncaster is gearing up to host a sporting extravaganza which will see students from across the region taking part.
Communication Specialist College Doncaster on Leger Way, which specialises in meeting the needs of students who are deaf or hearing impaired and those with communication difficulties including Autism and Aspergers, will be holding the Natspec Games on Wednesday 24 May 2017.
Natspec is the membership association for organisations which offer specialist provision for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and this is the second year the Games, which involve young people aged between 17 and 53, have been held. Last year’s event took place at the Queen Alexander College in Birmingham.
John Nugent, sports tutor at Communication Specialist College Doncaster, which is part of Doncaster Deaf Trust, said; “We are absolutely thrilled to have been selected to host the 2017 Natspec Games. This year the event has grown and to ensure all colleges gain access, there have been four regional events set up around the country.
“As regional hosts Doncaster has invited other specialist colleges from across the Yorkshire and Midlands area to our site and we are so looking forward to a day full of sporting fun, which we know will be of huge benefit to our students.”
Activities on the day include a 5-a-side football competition, boccia pairs competition, table cricket, new age kurling, archery, cycling, volleyball and athletics with the 60m sprint, shot put and standing jump. Some events will be in competition format and others will be an opportunity for learners to have a go and take part.
John added: “So far we have five colleges who will be competing on the day including Mansfield, Harrogate, Lincolnshire, Wakefield and Loughborough with another bringing some spectators and staff to enjoy the competition and activities. We will also be supported by students from New College Pontefract who will be using the day for experience and to gather evidence towards their sporting qualifications.
“We’re all set for a great day of sport and fitness!”
