Hallam students selected for England water polo team

Four Sheffield Hallam University students are set to represent England in a European water polo competition this weekend.

Tom Grieve, Alex Gaywood, Peter Pickford and Elliott Kelly will travel to Poland today to take part in the EU Nations Cup in what will be their first senior call up.

The team take on Portugal tomorrow in their opening fixture followed by Lithuania with the final taking place on Sunday.

"Representing my country at water polo is an absolute honour and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity," said Alex, a sport and exercise science student. "A huge thank you to my family, coaches and Sheffield Hallam for the support and training that has led to these moments."

Elliot Kelly graduated with a PGCE last year. He said: "The University were very supportive and subsidised my club fees. This meant that I could study and focus on a challenging course whilst knowing full well the Hallam team were fully behind me and supporting my sporting endeavours. This is the highlight of my sporting career and I cannot begin to explain how excited I am to represent my country and Sheffield. "
