Economic snapshot

UK public sector net borrowing (excluding public sector banks) decreased by £1.6 billion in April 2018, compared with April 2017. Public sector net debt stood at 85.1% of GDP in April 2018. The latest UK labour market figures revealed that in the three months to March 2018, the number of people in employment rose by 197,000. Unemployment declined by 46,000 over the same period. Average weekly earnings (excluding bonuses) rose by 2.9%, up from 2.8%. UK retail sales increased by 1.6% in April 2018.
