University Technical College Campaign

The Chamber is backing a bid for a University Technical College (UTC) to be built in Doncaster.

Feedback from local employers is essential to the project to determine the level of support for a UTC in the town. Please read the information below and then complete this short survey to feedback your views on the proposal...

What is a UTC and how could it benefit your business?

  • UTCs are schools for 14-18 year olds specialising in the delivery of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
  • The purpose of UTCs is to develop the advanced technical skills required to ensure that the UK prospers in the 21st century.
  • Doncaster UTC will work very closely with local businesses and partners to effectively develop the next generation of engineers and technicians, giving them the right skills, knowledge and experience to fulfil their potential and prepare them for the world of work.

“The UTC will support the education, training and vocational development  of young people in sectors that are pivotal to the future of Doncaster’s economy.  These include: Rail, Engineering, and Manufacturing.  All of these sectors are, already, key contributors to Doncaster’s economy; however, businesses in all of these sectors are also reporting skills gaps and an ageing workforce – issues that are constraining their growth potential.

The UTC will help generate a supply chain of ambitious young people into these sectors and consequently help ensure that Doncaster has the talent it needs to maintain and develop more world-class businesses in these sectors. A visible and successful UTC will help raise aspirations in our young people and highlight the exciting STEM related careers available to them in and around Doncaster." Dan Fell, CEO Doncaster Chamber.  Read Dan's blog on why the Chamber is supporting this campaign here.

For Students/Parents/Carers:

A Doncaster UTC would not only potentially benefit local businesses, it would also have an obvious impact on local students and their parents/carers. Therefore feedback is also being sought from the perspective of these groups too.

How you can help:

  • Please distribute this information sheet for students, parents and carers to your employees and invited them to complete this short survey. Please note that this survey is a different version to the business survey above.
  • Feedback is essential to ensure that this project is shaped in a way to suit the needs of the local community therefore any help in conveying this message to your staff would be very much appreciated.
